Why Social Work?
I first decided to become a Social Worker because I always enjoyed donating to charity and participating in yearly church giveaways (only at my home church) to help the poor or persons that are in need. I also travelled to Banjul, The Gambia (West Africa) in 2001. I am planning on going
to Africa again next year. I never liked the fact that there are people starving for food and water, don't have clothes to keep them warm during the winter months, and who need personal hygiene items, but cannot afford it by living under the poverty line. This really saddens my heart and makes me want to cry. I always wanted to make a difference in our world, so this is why I
decided to become a Social Worker. It's funny how this have always been a passion of mine without me even noticing it. Social Work has always been inside me. I just never knew how to go by becoming a Social Worker until I enrolled into school as an Undergraduate Student. I see WSU School of Social Work's Mission helping me to develop the kind of social worker I would like to become by getting more in depth with my Interest Areas of: Family Systems Theory, and Interpersonal Practice. I will be prepared to know how to work with families more in detail, will have practice skills and techniques, will know the policies, procedures, and research knowledge to help use towards working with families, and etc. I can use my undergraduate experience, graduate experience, employment experience, and classroom or online experience to help me stay professional and know how to deal with conflict in the future.
