Journal for Unit Two (Sessions 4-6)
I read the Social Policy Making and Analysis of Unit 2. I read the Overview, Competencies and Outcomes, the three required
readings, the Power Point Lecture and summed it up in my own words, viewed the three videos of Pete Alcock: What is Social Policy? How we study social policy? Students and Social Policy? I went to the website of the U.S. House and Senate Representatives, and Prepared a Policy Brief for my paper. There wasn’t a discussion board for this session either. All the required work listed above will be summarized in more detail below.
Overview Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated that Policy making and Analysis is very important. That we need to examine how policy proposals become state or federal laws. Socio-political and economic factors have drive, policies, and initiatives discussed. That this approach to policy analysis is examined, including models used.

Power Point Lecture
This lecture gave a brief description of analyzing social welfare policies. The lecture gave causes
of policies, the study of the policies, consequence of the policy, how the policy was developed, reason why the policy was developed, event of policies, how the policy was created, whom has power over others, the theory it is based on, what exactly is developed through the policy, what is implemented through the process before the outcome gets decided, the delivery process, the definition of the street-level bureaucracy, two models of the social welfare policy analysis, Sequential and Critical Theories and their definitions, steps of the Sequential and Critical Theory Models, why policy making doesn’t follow a course, and how can policies that promote social justice respond to values and beliefs.
Videos
Video 1 (Pete Alcock-What is Social Policy?):
Mr. Alcock states that Social Policy is about promoting welfare and well-being, how we make the live of all citizens in our country, how we make it possible for them to live safe and healthy lives, how we make it possible for them to achieve what’s healthy in their lives, we are studying how we deliver welfare and well-being to people, and we practice in a number of ways we conceive the Nature of Welfare. For example: what do we mean by good health, can we define and measure health, what do we do to try to promote good health, that students studying policy will study the National Health Service, How it’s changed, How it’s developed, how it operates, educational systems, role of education for school children, and how education is taken forward, by life-long learning. He goes on to say that we will need to know how to provide by people’s material needs, housing, transport, and other environmental factors, how we provide for the distribution of resources, people’s income, Social Security, how they will be developed, implemented, and practiced. There are Private Commotion Agencies, Social Care, and what happens in Formal Relations with citizens.

Video 2 (Pete Alcock-How We Study Social Policy?):
He states that there are two broad dimensions of social policy. First, The normative dimension-engaging
with the theories, the principles, and the values that underlie social policy. What is it we’re trying to achieve? What do we mean by welfare, justice, equality, care, health, and education? He states that we should look at the key terms, embracing the importance of ideologies, the structure of how we think of things, policy, political, and moral differences. These are theoretical and conceptualized based. Second, The Empirical Dimension values exist, what is happening, how health care and education is delivered, how it’s worked on the ground we’re working. For example: who studied how hospitals delivered cancer care, the way how schools teach people “A” level subjects, how universities recruit, need to understand this information, research methods, and know what’s good and bad research. The relationship between the empirical knowledge of how we gather data and how the research feeds into this process.

Video 3 (Pete Alcock-Students and Social Policy Studies):
He states that Social Policy graduates who enter in a wide range of different professions and activities. That it embraces the public and private sector of government; it embraces the health and education. It can be done in graduate programs, it is becoming an academic in social policy, it links to research, empirical dimensions of how research works. These graduates can get jobs in research, health administrations, housing offices, and the delivery of social policy. For example: Doctors, Teachers, Nurses, (organizers, administrators, managers, and researchers working beside them). They can work through the local community. It gives you the moral value. These students leave with the skills and duties to carry on welfare.

Preparation of the Policy Brief Assignment

Reflection
I learned a great deal in this second unit. It was alot of work but I was still able to get it completed in a timely manner. The videos gave me insight about social policy and what individuals studying policy will need to know about it. Hillary Clinton and the powerpoint lecture basically gave a introduction of social policy and the lecture gave a factual knowledge about how it was first developed and a history on social welfare. I learned by the learning activities, watching videos, and by a few readings that all tied together. I thought that this was a great way to develop information on social policy, its history, and appreciating our society in many different ways. I felt that I want to do more to help but don't know how I can go about giving food and clean water to the poor due to danger in these countries (e.g. Africa). I visualized what the President might have been thinking about the things he said of will people help out more or will our country ever get back on track. A attitude I had about viewing this unit was the way of how America have so much money and not really doiing as much to help its people get out of unemployment and to help countries like Somalia, Africa with food and clean water. Yes America helps out with Tsunami clean-ups and other things but can do a lot more to help out its country as well as other countries in need. I gained new skills of knowing how to effectively help out my future clients. I knew the hardships that America is facing today, and want to know more about the Congress and government helping create new jobs, helping with health care, and etc. I learned the importance of having knowledge about policies and how I should appreciate the things that I have since there are others out there who would trade places with me in a heartbeat. What I would not forget is to become very knowledgeable about policies of companies, agencies, and organizations so I can help my future client become competent of life's problems and whatever the case may be. The most significant factor in how I learned is by viewing the videos and by comparing them to the assigned readings.
