Journal for Unit Three (Sessions 7-9)
I read the overview of the four vulnerable groups of children, the disabled, elderly, and mentally ill populations of the United States. Many policies and programs are described in this unit to discuss the problems created, developed, and treatment and interventions made to help these individuals. The field trip to Children’s Workforce Development Council & Movie, power point lecture, discussion board, and blog was not required to do for this week due to the Policy Brief. The only thing that was posted on the Blog was for students to post their entry websites for the Policy Brief as well as respond and make a post or comment to two students Policy Briefs.
I already picked out my topic and had it approved by the professor. I also chose five scholarly professional journal articles on the policy topic: Unemployment. Since unemployment is so broad, I tied it into a certain population of African Americans.
On the Discussion Board for Unit 2, the requirement was to choose a peer-reviewed journal article based on my policy topic. This was just to practice on the Policy Brief. I had to blog what I found and what I expected to find from my policy.
Before I started my Policy Brief, I read all the instructions on Blackboard, in the syllabus, and looked at four policy brief examples completed in previous classes to help me create my brief. Once I understood what a policy brief was from the syllabus’s definition, I started to read all five of my scholarly journals and annotated them all. I used in-text citations and APA writing style. I had minor problems with the new APA style (6th Edition) criteria until I was emailed a helpful link by the professor. I made my corrections to my Weebly.com site.
Reflection
What I thought about when I first started my Policy Brief paper was that it was not bad at all, simple, and straight to the point. I started to feel overwhelm when I had to change some minor in-text citations as well as use the new APA 6th Edition citation style. I viewed the Owl website at Purdue that was given by the professor and then made my corrections. I visualized working on this assignment for a long time but this seemed to be not the case by me completing it in a day and having it revised for the next two days. The attitudes I gained from this session was that I am very glad that this assignment is over with and hope that the professor was reading and grading them once a student posted their assignment on the blog of Blackboard. I saw fourteen students who posted their assignment. I developed skills/concepts of knowing how to write a policy brief and how to properly cite in the 6th Edition of the APA citation style. I knew what I wanted to say before I wrote the brief and knew what topic I wanted to learn about, as well as being interested in. I wanted to learn how to create an Appendix for my brief even though it was not required and necessary since there was not a paper involved. I learned how to use an Appendix and add them in my text as well as finding out the new APA style. What I will learn in this session that I would not forget is how to post blogs and write future policy briefs. The most significant factor in how I learned was by examples from the previous students whom completed a policy brief and how many different policies there are. For example: the topics other students in the class wrote about like Teens and Sexting, etc.
